Celebrating Black History Month at SBH

At SBH, we recognize that celebrating diversity means actively honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions that shape our communities and our profession. Black History Month offers an important opportunity for us to reflect, learn, and celebrate the impact of Black leaders, innovators, and communities – past and present.

In that spirit, throughout February we were excited to host several initiatives and events. Here are a few of the experiences we introduced to create space for learning, connection and celebration across our firm:

  • We made a donation to Black & Beyond The Binary Collective, an organization building leadership, healing, and safety for Black – African transgender, queer, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, intersex and asexual Oregonians.
  • Our internal newsletter highlighted Black-owned businesses and encouraged employees to support and shop at Black-owned establishments.
  • The firm came together and watched Marshall, the story of Thurgood Marshall, the crusading lawyer who would become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, as he battles through one of his career-defining cases.
  • The SBH Book Club selected When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole, with most books sourced from Third Eye Books.
  • We hosted a firm wide lunch with food from AKADI PDX, and desserts provided by DB Dessert Company.

At SBH, we foster a workplace where diverse histories and perspectives are recognized and valued throughout the year!
